Elizabeth Sweatman

October 22, 1955 - August 8, 2025

Elizabeth Sweatman died peacefully in hospital in Victoria B.C. on August 8, 2025.

She is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughter Mikale Fenton, Mikale’s husband Eric Weber, and their young son August.

Elizabeth (Liz or Lizzy) will be mourned by her many loving friends, and by her large family: brothers Alan, Wynn (and Teddi), Paul (and Catherine Moss), Scott (Linda Ostry), and her sister Margaret (Glenn Buhr). Her nieces and nephews remember her as empathetic, very funny and independent-minded, “the adult I could talk to.” She was a sensitive yet skeptical individual, a complicated woman of beauty and wit.

As a young woman, in the 1970s, Liz worked in Toronto for a while, then traveled, skiing the Swiss Alps, exploring the islands of Greece, and relaxing on the beaches of Israel. She was brave and a bit reckless in her younger days, a fast skier, a wonderful and very quick cook, and she could riff off every skit from Saturday Night Live.

Liz grew up in Winnipeg and earned a Master of City Planning from the University of Manitoba, focusing on community health development in rural Manitoba. City planning suited her intellect. She worked with Winnipeg’s CentreVenture, an organization that encouraged collaboration between the city and businesses, aimed at developing the downtown core; it was a suitable place for someone with her force of idealism and a canny understanding of collective efforts, and where she demonstrated qualities of patient diplomacy that sometimes surprised her siblings.

Community and healthcare were constants in her varied professional life. She was on the Board of Directors of the Misericordia Health Centre, 2009 to 2010, and was a manager of patient safety, quality and risk at Health Sciences Centre.

Liz was a dedicated caregiver to her parents, Alan and Lorraine Sweatman, and it wasn’t until they had died, in 2012 and 2014 respectively, that she allowed herself to fulfill a dream of living in B.C. She moved to Comox in 2014, where she entered what Mikale jokingly called her “Elizabethan” era, and where she was in close contact with her beloved friends Anne Gardner and Laurie Stovel.

As a family of two, Liz and Mikale shared a deep and sometimes complicated bond. In winter, Mikale fondly recalls curling up on her mum’s bed with stacks of newspapers and old New Yorkers, or wandering Winnipeg’s Exchange District together to browse antique shops and enjoy dim sum. Liz passed on her passion for politics, public art, and urbanism, and instilled in Mikale a love of skiing, sailing, laughing babies, and a great dance party.

Lizzy could be swept away by natural beauty. She loved the Lake of the Woods, loved to sit outside into the small hours, alone or in the company of family and friends, and marvel at the sky. She had a great gift for living, matched by a countervailing awareness of human frailty and her acute distaste for what she felt was false. She was enormously intelligent and would not wish to hear that from anybody.

A celebration of Elizabeth’s life will be held at a later date. Mikale and her family extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many friends and relatives – especially Eileen Weber – who offered support during the final years and weeks of Elizabeth’s life. While in hospital, Liz found great comfort in the materials and resources provided by the Greater Victoria Public Library. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour her are invited to donate to their local public library, in recognition of Liz and Mikale’s belief that libraries are the heart of an informed, connected, and equitable democratic society.

David CARTER

February 16, 1969 - June 1, 2025

David died peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital after a brief but valiant battle against liver disease.  David was predeceased by his father Reg Carter and sister Judy Bryan (Carter). He is survived by his mother Beverly Carter (Clem Poff);  his brother Doug Carter (Anita); brother-in-law Brad Bryan; nieces Laurie Bryan and Katie Honkanen (Jesse) and great niece Georgia.

David was born in Victoria and it remained his home his entire life where he attended Strawberry Vale, Colquitz and Spectrum Schools.  After high school David tried his hand at a variety of jobs in the construction industry, eventually finding his way to the concrete industry where he enjoyed a long career as a talented and sought after finisher. Strong willed and independent David made his way through life on his own terms and was never afraid to take the path less travelled. David overcame many obstacles during his life and the family is particularly proud of the strength of character and resilience he showed during his final months.

The one constant in David’s life was the love for his dogs.  He could be found almost daily at the Colwood Creek Dog Park.

The family also wants to acknowledge long time friends Scott Griffiths, Sean Middleton and Tom Adamcsak for their loyal support of David throughout his life’s journey.

Gone but not forgotten – rest in peace David.

No celebration of life by request.

Ian Derek KEWLEY

November 1, 1960 - May 14, 2025

Ian Kewley was born in Edinburgh Scotland, the youngest child of George Henry Kewley and Helen Blackie Kay. The Kewley family emigrated from the UK to Calgary, Alberta in 1967.

Ian is survived by his 4 siblings- Ruth (Lionel Blazenko), George (Angela Bringas), Christine (Barry Kelly) & David, 8 nieces and nephews and their children, as well as his ex-wife, Kathleen McLaughlin, and his spouse, Margaret Hess.

Ian lived and worked in Calgary, Saskatoon and Edmonton before settling in Victoria in 2000.

Since 2008, he has been the darling and beloved partner of Margaret Hess.

They were a perfect match, and felt truly grateful to have found one another.

Ian was an avid cyclist and walker, and proud that he never held a driver’s licence.

He enjoyed shopping and LOVED getting a deal.

He liked good food, especially when it was spicy, and had a big appetite for life.

He loved reading science fiction and non-fiction, and kept up on world events by reading 39 diverse news sources each week.

He loved classical music (especially Bach), opera, church organs, theatre, and film.

He always enjoyed a good story.

Ian was a good, kind and generous person who made a lasting impression on everyone he met.

From 2000-2025, Ian worked as a data analyst, something at which he excelled.

Many of his closest friendships were formed at the offices he worked in.

Ian had a straight up, no fuss approach and perspective on life.

He was a breath of fresh air, always having a unique perspective on events and goings on,

never too fussed about anything while still engaged with everything.

He was extremely knowledgeable about many things and shared his knowledge freely.

Ian leaves a big hole in our universes but we are all so much the better for having had him as part of our lives.

A big thank you to Victoria Hospital At Home, Victoria Hospice at Home, and especially the James Bay Community Nurses. Ian died at home in his sleep, with Margaret at his side.

In lieu of flowers or donations, Ian would love it if you went to see some local theatre or hear a church concert.

Later this year, there will be a memorial service in Victoria for friends who live on the West Coast, and next year, Ian’s ashes will be interred in Calgary.

Robin Scott Stones

August 26, 1975 - February 23, 2025

In Loving Memory of Robin Scott Stones

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robin, who died unexpectedly on February 23 due to an accidental overdose.

Robin was a son, a brother, an uncle, a cousin, a coworker, and a friend. He had a rough, loud, tattooed exterior—and beneath it, one of the biggest hearts around. His humour, full of offside remarks and perfectly ill-timed jokes, was just one of the ways he made people feel seen and connected.

He cared deeply for those he loved. Even when interrupting you mid-sentence with a joke that made you roll your eyes, he was listening — really listening — and you always knew he had your back.

Robin had a soft spot for animals, especially the scruffy and overlooked ones. His favourite pastime was heading to the beach to “scritch” random dogs and soak in the sun and calm that only the ocean could offer.

He leaves behind his loving parents, his sister, his nephews and niece, a wide extended family of cousins, a work family and many close friends who will miss him immensely.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 24 at James Bay Community Centre in Victoria (140 Oswego St, Victoria) from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. All are welcome, and those who wish to speak or share memories are invited.

After 3:00 PM, we’ll head to Bent Mast Pub (512 Simcoe St, Victoria ) for food, drinks, and time to connect. For anyone interested or able, we’ll then make our way to Robin’s favourite beach at Dallas Road just East of Clover Point to sprinkle some of his ashes — a place where he found peace, joy and dogs to ‘scritch’.

Please feel free to attend any part of the day that feels right for you and invite others who know Robin. If you plan to come, reaching out to a family member or close friend would help us prepare for numbers.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robing’s honour can be made to the following services:
SPCA: https://bcspca.donorsupport.co/page/FUNYDHZMBNM

BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services: https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/WebLink.aspx?name=E355819QE&id=1

Robin — your offside humour, your heart, and your scrappy love will live on in all of us.
